The sudden emergence of Mini LED technology has caused no small reaction in the market.
In April, Apple launched a new generation of iPad Pro with Mini LED technology at the global developer conference. Three months later, Samsung and Huawei also launched their own Mini LED products: Samsung's first Mini LED backlit electric screen Odyssey Neo G9, and Huawei's flagship Hongmeng TV V75 Super with Mini LED technology.
Apple, Samsung, Huawei as the leader of consumer electronics, has a very strong wind vane role. The news that these three companies entered the Mini LED quickly drove the entire industry's new understanding of Mini LED.
It is not an exaggeration to say that Mini LED is a sudden rise. Originally, from the traditional CRT technology, the display panel industry has experienced the elimination of plasma technology, the most important LCD technology, is moving in the direction of OLED. Although industry giants such as TCL and BOE also have actions on this track, Mini LED originally existed only as a transitional means.
However, starting from this year, the situation is quietly changing: at CES in January, Samsung, LG and TCL announced their new models with Mini LED. In the next few months, giants like Apple, Samsung and Huawei also entered the track directly. It is generally believed that 2021 will be the first commercial year of Mini LED, and this technology is gradually regarded as a feasible solution that can directly compete with OLED.
In the face of this halfway through the Cheng Yaojin, panel manufacturers will also usher in their own joy and sorrow. What is more noteworthy is that with the increasing importance of Mini LED in the display panel industry in the future, China may usher in good news. Unlike OLED, which Korean factories have been focusing on, Mini LED is an upgrade of traditional LCD technology. According to statistics released by IHS, in 2018, mainland China has surpassed South Korea to become the largest source of production capacity for LCD display panels. This also means that China will take the lead in the field of Mini LED based on LCD technology.
So, what is the Mini LED that may bring benefits to China in the future, what are its advantages, and why is it suddenly favored by major manufacturers this year, and then suddenly rise?
technological innovation
To answer these questions, we must first review the history of the panel field.
In the history of display devices, from the CRT (cathode picture tube), the display device has gone through three technical stages, namely CRT (cathode picture tube), PDP (plasma display), LCD (liquid crystal display). The big development direction is multi-function and digitization, and gradually showing trends such as high density, high resolution, high brightness, colorization, energy saving, large screen, flexibility, and transparency.
Under such a trend, the focus of the next generation products of major manufacturers is mainly on the OLED (organic light-emitting diode) that has been developed for more than 20 years. Compared with LCD, OLED has many advantages in display color gamut and contrast, refresh rate, PPI, power consumption, morphological plasticity, etc., which is very suitable for the consumer electronic product display market.
